⚡ QUICK ANSWERForm W-7 is the IRS application for an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number). Most non-US persons with US income use Reason b (non-resident alien claiming treaty benefits) or Reason h (other — for LLC/Form 5472 compliance). Attach your passport certification from an IRS CAA. Processing: 7–11 weeks.
What Is Form W-7?
Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is the official IRS form used to apply for or renew an ITIN. The current version is Form W-7 (Rev. October 2024). You complete Form W-7 once. After that, your ITIN is yours — no annual filing required (but it can expire if unused for 3 consecutive years).
💡 ITIN Plus does all of this for you. For $99, our IRS CAA prepares your complete Form W-7, certifies your passport via video call, and submits the package to the IRS. You receive your ITIN in 7–11 weeks without filing a single IRS form yourself.
Reason Codes — Which One to Use
| Code | Who It's For | Tax Return Required? |
| a | Non-resident alien required to file US return | Yes — attach 1040-NR |
| b | Non-resident alien NOT required to file US return but claiming treaty benefits | No return required* |
| c | US resident alien filing US return | Yes — attach return |
| d | Dependent of US citizen/national/resident alien | No |
| e | Spouse of US citizen/national filing jointly | Yes — attach joint return |
| f | Non-resident alien student/professor/researcher | Depends |
| g | Dependent/spouse of non-immigrant visa holder | No |
| h | Other — must explain US tax purpose | Usually No (exception) |
Most common for international entrepreneurs:
- Reason b — Use this if you receive US royalties (KDP, AdSense, licensing) and your country has a tax treaty with the USA. You are not filing a US tax return — you are only claiming the treaty rate on Form W-8BEN.
- Reason h — Use this if you need an ITIN for Form 5472 filing (foreign-owned US LLC), FIRPTA withholding, or other reasons without an attached tax return. Write a brief explanation on the line provided.
Form W-7 Line-by-Line Guide
Box 1a — Name — Legal Name
Enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport. First name, last name. Do not abbreviate.
Example: Ahmed Waqas Mohammed → exactly as passport shows
Box 1b — Name at Birth (if different)
If your name changed after birth (marriage, legal change), enter birth name here. Otherwise leave blank.
Box 2 — Applicant's Mailing Address
Your complete current mailing address including country. This is where the IRS mails your ITIN letter. Use a reliable address you can receive mail at.
Box 3 — Foreign Address
If your mailing address is in the USA (e.g., a US forwarding service), enter your actual foreign residence address here.
Box 4 — Date of Birth / Country of Birth / Country of Citizenship
Enter exactly as shown on passport. Date format: MM/DD/YYYY. Country of birth = where you were born. Country of citizenship = your passport country.
Example: 05/15/1985 / Pakistan / Pakistan
Box 5 — Visa Information
If you entered the USA on a visa relevant to this application, enter the type and number. If you have never entered the USA and are applying from abroad, leave blank.
Box 6a — Foreign Tax Identification Number
Your national tax ID in your home country (if applicable). Optional but helpful. If your country has a national tax ID, enter it here.
Box 6b — Previous ITIN
If you are renewing an expired ITIN, enter your existing ITIN here. For new applications, leave blank.
Box 6c — IRSN
IRS-assigned number (rare). Leave blank for most applicants.
Box 6d — Reason Code (Checkboxes)
Select the appropriate reason code (a through h) based on your situation. See the Reason Codes table above. Most international online entrepreneurs select b or h.
Box 7 — Signature + Date
Must be signed by the applicant personally. Print name and date. Date must be within 30 days of submission. Missing signature is the #1 rejection reason.
Supporting Documents
For foreign nationals applying from outside the USA, the acceptable supporting document hierarchy is:
- Passport — This is the primary document. Establishes both identity AND foreign status in one document. Required when applying via mail (must be original or CAA-certified copy). ITIN Plus certifies via video call — no mailing needed.
- National Identity Card — Must include photo, name, current address, date of birth, and expiry date. Many national IDs accepted, but must be current and not expired.
- Foreign Birth Certificate — Acceptable to prove identity but does not establish foreign status alone. Requires a second document for foreign status proof.
⚠️ Critical: If you mail your original passport to the IRS, it may take 60+ days to be returned. There are documented cases of IRS-mailed passports being lost. Always use an IRS CAA — we certify your passport remotely, no mailing required.
Common W-7 Mistakes That Cause Rejection
- Missing signature — The #1 rejection cause. Form W-7 must be signed by the applicant in Box 7.
- Wrong reason code — Selecting reason "a" without attaching a tax return, or selecting "b" without the required treaty documentation.
- Name mismatch — Name on W-7 must match name on supporting documents exactly.
- Expired supporting documents — Passport must be valid/unexpired. Expired passports are not accepted.
- No treaty claim documentation — For Reason b, IRS expects documentation of the specific treaty article and rate being claimed.
- Tax return not attached — For Reason a or c applicants who must attach a return, failing to include it results in automatic rejection.

FAQs — Form W-7
Can I submit Form W-7 online?
No. The IRS does not accept online Form W-7 submissions from individuals. You must submit via mail, in-person at an IRS TAC, or via an IRS CAA. ITIN Plus as a CAA handles submission on your behalf after completing your certification.
Do I need a US address to apply for an ITIN?
No. You can apply for an ITIN from any country in the world. Enter your foreign address in Box 2 (or Box 3 if your mailing address is in the USA). The IRS will mail your ITIN letter to the address on your W-7.
How recent must the date be on my W-7 signature?
The IRS requires the signature date to be within 30 days of the W-7 submission to the IRS. ITIN Plus handles timing to ensure your signature date is current at submission.
Can I apply for an ITIN for my spouse and children at the same time?
Yes. Each family member requiring an ITIN submits their own Form W-7 with their own supporting documents. ITIN Plus can process multiple family applications simultaneously. Contact us for family pricing.
